POLKA DOTS
We love a good pattern but polka dots require a little boldness to wear. For that reason, we consider this a trend to skip this spring.
In her book Patternalia, Jude Stewart explains that the connection to polka dots and polka music murkiness, and most likely intwined with products being marketed as polka-related when the fad rose in popularity. Before then, the wearing of polka dot was somewhat of a taboo in Europe. Because of hand-sewing’s inaptitude; most found it impossible to sew perfectly rounded, evenly spaced circles, which created a blotchy pattern more closely associated with diseases like the plague and smallpox. (In African countries, on the other hand, dots symbolized magic and hunting, according to Slate (Mentalfloss, com).
In 1926, the first Native American woman to be crowned Miss America, Norma Smallwood, wore a polka dot swimsuit, bringing the trend into the modern era.
Despite that polka dots creation relayed on sewing circles to fabric initially, today polka dots are considered alternative fashion prints when it entered the Mod fashion movement in the 60’s with Twiggy and Goldie Hawn wearing the trend.
Polka dot became associated with the pinup movement in the 80s and remains a heavy influence in the style. So if that style resonated with you; pick up some polka dot but its not for the faint of heart.
MESH
Mesh fabric was invented in 1888 by a British textile owner, but it gained widespread popularity in the 1980s thanks to sportswear manufacturers.(wearthrugallery.com) We love the look with sportswear (workout clothes in this sense) but mesh also remains rooted in goth and punk styles.
Mesh remains great to lay over dresses, and shirts. However. it takes a brave person to wear it alone. Mesh remains a trend to skip this Spring.
Capri Pants
Capri pants were introduced by fashion designer Sonja de Lennart in 1948, and were popularized by her and English couturier Bunny Roger. The name of the pants is derived from the Italian isle of Capri, where they rose to popularity in the late 1950s and early 1960s.
But Audrey Hepburn popularized Capris at a time when women seldom wore pants.(english.elpais.com) Hence, the pants became part of the women’s right movement.
Despite its history as a summer staple. it still remains a difficult fit for those with large calves and long legs.
Would you rock any of these trends this Spring?
