Rainy Season: Alternative ways to stay dry

Introduction

Rainy season arrived early this year. We relay so much on plastic during the rainy season but there are natural fibers that can keep us dry as well.

We list some products that repel water and keep you try without hurting the environment. Vegan options remain not sustainable but check out sustainable options listed in our last blog.

Wool

Wool’s waterproof abilities remain something few people know. Wool’s combination of warmth and waterproofing means it’s great for cold rainy days during the rainy season.

Wool’s napping creates a great seal for light showers.  Woolmark created a way to make merino wool as waterproof as the traditional plastic rain coat.

We love this tech wool raincoat from Norwegian wool which costs $995.

Another option, a wool hat withstands rain very well and the price remains more reasonable then a full wool jacket.

Another alternative remains seeking out natural fibers with PTFE, a thermoplastic polymer.

Leather

Leather can be worn in the rain but suede leathers requires a waterproof wax to seal the hide so cracking does not occur. Most leather goods companies sell the wax at the counter.

Suede leather, however, remains mostly used in shoes and good leather jacket withstands natural rain water very well.

It remains a cheaper alternative to wool at half the price.

Conclusion

For a more sustainable way to stay dry, track the schedule for rain on a weather app and try to work around those times. Leave the cotton at home since it is not waterproof and takes hours to dry. Carry an umbrella and if the rain gets too heavy; hide out in a store or use the moment to get a coffee.
